Profile

When a Japanese child reaches the age of eight he or she is introduced to the art of writing with brush and ink. The craft of calligraphy used to be taught much more rigorously in former days, but even now in the days of electronic communications, millions of Japanese children are at least introduced to the beauty of their traditional writing. There are many occasions in an adult’s life where the ability to write well using brush and ink is called for, such as signing the registry at weddings. An estimated 500,000 adult Japanese study calligraphy under registered teachers, much like people in the West take art classes.

Tokyo-based Senho Tomono is a traditional calligrapher par excellence. Trained in the use of the brush since childhood and captivated by its incredible range of artistic possibilities, he practiced until he became master of all styles, from cursive to formal and to the avant-garde. What sets him apart is the rapport and total confidence he has in the medium, which gives his work both grace and strength.
