Profile

Michiko Sotobayashi is one of only a few Japanese artists who work in the rare and expensive coloured inks from China. The immediacy of the ink and brush medium along with the inherent economy of the calligrapher’s strokes puts this work totally in a class of its own, and by employing colour in this distinctive medium Sotobayashi has been able to introduce to us coloured artworks of a special mystery and beauty. Though a highly skilled calligrapher, she has nevertheless cast off all the conventions of that discipline to create intriguing, pretty, and very modern work.

A talented and innovative artist, Sotobayashi also maintains a high reputation in Japan’s traditional calligraphy circles for her input to such elite organizations as the Mainichi Shodo Association.

Exhibitions

Following an appearance in the 2000 Yangu Art Japan Exhibition in New York she has been invited to hold two solo shows in New York. Sotobayashi frequently exhibits in Japan and is sought after to take part in unusual collaborations with artists in other media, e.g. avant-garde ikebana.
