Graham & Alex Blacklock

Graham "Nudge" Blacklock and his father Alex Blacklock are both latecomers to painting. Alex started painting when he was 73 and Nudge in his 50s though he only started painting seriously in 2007. And yet, Nudge won first prize at the 7^th Annual National Parks and Wildlife Service Aboriginal Art Award in Murwillumbah held at the Tweed River Art Gallery in September 2008. His father won a highly commended at the same exhibition. Gallery Tokonoma is pleased to present an exhibition of indigenous art featuring these two award-winning Gold Coast-based artists from October 11 to November 9, 2008

Graham 'Nudge' Blacklock

Nudge was born in Guyra NSW on the 23rd of April, 1958 and was bought up in the western suburbs of Sydney.
The stories that Nudge paints are from his mothers and fathers countries which are the Biripi People from Port Macquarie in Northern NSW and the Ngarabal People from Glen Innes and Tingah.
Nudge has had his work shown in individual exhibitions and group exhibitions both in Australia and overseas.

Nudge's aboriginal culture exists in oral form, where for thousands of years tribe members have been learning and passing on knowledge from The Dreamtime or The Time of Creation. Symbolism is predominant in Aboriginal culture and expressed in many forms and is portrayed in artistic form such as body painting, sand mosaics for ceremony to name a few.
Nudge portrays symbolism through his work in a natural connection between his subject matter and the aspects of his Aboriginal culture.
