The Chinese characters used in both the Japanese and Chinese writing systems were originally pictograms, most of which have been so stylized that they now cease to display their meaning pictorially. Nevertheless the original pictograms are still known. Calligraphic artist Genpo Fukushima focuses on the original spirit of the early pictograms to reveal to the viewer their quintessential meaning.

However, unlike many calligraphic artists who train themselves to brush standard forms in visually appealing ways, Fukushima takes the original meaning of a character and uses the medium of the pictogram to convey philosophical content.

Background:

Tokyo-based Genpo Fukushima has won numerous awards in Japanese calligraphy circles and has exhibited in Holland, France, and Germany in addition to Australia.
