Gwyn Hanssen Pigott OAM talks about Deborah's work

There are wonderful contradictions in these works of Deborah Roettinger,
offering a clue to their unique seductiveness and power.  She has taken silk (ephemeral, floating) and painted it, folding it, crushing, pressing, opening, and ironing it – discovering fields and rivers of moving colour which can be livened again with touches of gold or flecks of red or washes of grey.  Then, with a meticulous eye and hand she cuts and mounts and shapes this rich fabric into a strongly abstracted personal story. These images strike us from a distance – at times compellingly still, at times shimmering with movement, at times ominous, even slyly vertiginous, but always with an architectural order that belies the detailed lushness and secret play of light and colour that unfolds as we look closer.  Here is order and play: abstraction and narrative – opposites that marvellously hold and delight us.
